No, it's not his current favourite
politician of all time says Martyn
Best, nor his favourite all-time football team; this week sees
what he hopes is the first piece of silverware to be lifted in the
short history of Everton
Tigers.
The Tigers are Merseyside's leading basketball team, and
evolved from a wonderful community programme run for many years by
Henry Mooney in Toxteth, Liverpool 8.
In 2007, they became part of an equally
uplifting programme Everton in the
Community, backed by Everton
FC, and joined the British
Basketball League. In only their second season, they play in
their historic first cup final at Birmingham NIA this coming Sunday
against Plymouth Raiders.
Hopes are high - the Tigers are leading the BBL, have a lively
squad and a great head coach in Tony Garbelotto
and have only suffered two defeats this season - although the
ominous bells of one of those defeats being against Plymouth are
ringing loudly.
In a sporting world, where our
"heroes" are generally very disconnected with their fan
base, and when the meetings we have with these so highly (over)paid
"demi-gods" often end in sad disappointment, it's a
real joy to have gotten to know the Tigers' players.
Real characters, in all senses of the word,
they give so much back to the fans and the local community, always
have time for those who engage with them, and present themselves as
ideal role models for young people.
Let's hope on Sunday they will be worthy winners.
