Last weekend Sarah Brown,
wife of Gordon, was the guest editor of the News of the World's
glossy supplement, Fabulous.
As patron of Wellbeing of Women,
Brown used her ample little black book to get interviews for the
magazine, which was heavily orientated on women's health issues
and even featured fashion and make-up spreads based on the
charity's colours.
The cover shoot featured an interview
with new mum, Jools Oliver, the wife of celebrity chef Jamie,
talking openly about her experience of IVF.
This is where the influence of Brown
comes into its own - few editors, even those of the top magazines,
could encourage an open discussion with a celebrity about such a
sensitive, not to mention personal, subject. But she could.
I haven't read the magazine
myself, but it has been criticised (in an otherwise positive
write-up) for not featuring more of Brown herself, or anything
about her life at home with the Prime Minister.
While being the PM's wife
undoubtedly helped secure this enviable opportunity to publicise a
worthwhile cause, I think it is admirable and shows great awareness
for Sarah not to use it as a way to shoehorn in some fluffy
publicity for the PM, either directly or via a feature on herself,
in a magazine focussing on an entirely different, far more
important issue.
