Surveys are a mainstay of the PR industry, says Dougal Paver. And several this year have piqued this angler's interest.
You don't have to be exposed to the inner workings of the PR industry for long to be able to spot a story that's been placed with the media. And of late, they've taken an interesting turn.
"Everything's being blamed on the credit crunch," said a slightly exasperated colleague, responding to a flimsy story about how sales of safes had (allegedly) increased dramatically as more people pulled their money from ropey banks.
He might be right, however. According to the National Federation of Fish Fryers sales of cod and chips were up 3.2 per cent in the first quarter of the year. And guess what? It's because of the recession. People are trading down from restaurants to their favourite comfort food.
And how do we know it's their favourite? A survey told us so. By Finish Lemon Sparkle, of all people. Fish and chips rank number one in the nation's list of favourite smells, out-wafting freshly baked bread, new babies and even Sunday roast.
On a similar vein Holiday Inn surveyed 7,000 Britons about what they treasured most about our culture and there, right at the top, above the Queen, real ale, Yorkshire puddings and even James Bond were fish and chips.
Maybe there's some truth in these surveys after all.
