First day of summer

So can we really believe that today is officially the first day of summer?

The first sign of sunshine and a little taste of warm weather and in true British style the shorts come out, the sunglasses go on and more important than anything everyone has a smile on their face.

The smell of barbecues fills the air and we all get into true holiday mode.

But more often than not as we all build our hopes up for a glorious summer ahead, these are dashed with the return of rain, wind and cold weather.

Apparently this will not be the case this year. That is if we trust what our forecasters are saying. They are predicting one of the five hottest summers on record with temperatures expected to hit 38.5 degrees in August.

And in addition to record temperatures our British summer is also predicted to last longer, through to the middle of September.

But will we then pay for it when winter arrives? I personally think if we are blessed with hot sunny summers, we would all be far more acceptable of cold and freezing temperatures during the winter months.

What us Brits can't cope with is frost until May and rain throughout August as has been the case in recent years.

Chatting to a friend in India last week, I was speaking of my delight that temperatures had finally reached 10-degrees.... a very acceptable day in Britain .... to which he replied: "That is our winter. I certainly couldn't cope with temperatures that low all year round. How do you cope?"

I went on to discuss how quite unusually in May there had been occasions when I had to defrost the car before leaving for work with temperatures plummeting to minus three degrees. "You mean you actually go to work when it is so cold?" he said in horror.

His sentiments really put things into perspective. We complain when it is cold - and we complain when it is too hot - perhaps we should just all learn to love our British weather and appreciate our seasons.
