News that BSM has dropped the Vauxhall
Corsa as its car of choice and opted for a deal with Fiat
for a fleet of the kooky new Fiat 500, is another blow to the
credibility of British motor manufacturing.
It is odd that a nation that relies so heavily on the motor car
should be almost singularly incapable of developing a reliable,
efficient and desirable car for everyday use that is economically
within reach of normal people.
Seemingly, our only triumph in this field has been the design
classic that is the
Mini. Every other car from a British marque has either
been notoriously prone to dissolve in the British weather or about
double the average annual salary.
So, is the bad image of British cars justified? Were they all
really that bad? Well, no, not really. We have a grim view of them
in this country partly thanks to the childish bluster of Clarkson
and his ilk.
Some models carry the baggage of all kinds of negative associations
of their era while others bask in the nostalgic sunshine of an
imaginary decade long summer - these associations are difficult to
shake.
That motor vehicles communicate is not in doubt. That they
reinforce stereotypes about their country of origin is also obvious
particularly when you look at this
exceptionally beautiful French model.
