Dougal has spent his entire career in PR consultancy, having studied marketing at Manchester Polytechnic before returning to Liverpool. His early career with SBA saw him focus on regeneration-related clients - both public and private sector - and this has remained a key area of expertise.
Dougal rose to become a shareholder and director of SBA before undertaking a management buyout in December 1997 to establish Paver Downes. A second buyout, of the agency's PR division, followed in June 2006, leading to the establishment of Paver Smith. The agency is now considered the market-leader in Liverpool and is growing strongly.
Dougal is a board member of regeneration agency Liverpool Vision and of the city's Chamber of Commerce; sits on the development committee of Tate Liverpool; is a trustee of The Everton Collection; and is a fundraising patron of Claire House Children's Hospice. He's also a special advisor to the Liverpool Democracy Commission.
A key role at Paver Smith is to drive through the company's innovation agenda, which so far has encompassed Investors in People, the PRCA's prestigious Consultancy Management Standard, its new PRTV service and the drive to acquire ISO 14001.
He lives in Liverpool 8 with his wife Helen, a teacher, their son Rory and daughter Elizabeth. There's also a cat, sundry fishing rods and a mountain bike that rarely sees the light of day.
Interests: Dougal is the co-founder of Liverpool Fly Fishers and is a member of Corwen & District Anglers, which has 18 pristine beats on the Welsh Dee. He enjoys travel, football (Everton) and architecture, and is a member of the Minsterley Deer Stalkers. He's also in the Mossborough Hall and the Greens and Tweeds syndicates, as well as being a member of the legendary Everton Moaners' Club. How much he has to moan about depends entirely on what happened last weekend.
