Our parents said "don't speak to
strangers", reflects Martyn Best, as he
ponders what effect this early lesson has had on international
political relations.
As we grow up we continue to receive mixed messages: "Go on,
say hello", or "Is she too shy to talk", and before
we know it there's a world of confusion and the tower of Babel
comes crashing down.
But all it takes is one person to make a determined effort and the
world can start to change, and after years of mistrust, appalling
communication and general suspicion are we about to see a
fundamental change to everyone's benefit?
In Barack Obama's appearance on the Jay
Leno show last night, and his proposed open letter to the
people of Iran, he is taking a bold step, trying a different tack,
and hoping that dialogue will lead to better understanding and that
a greater chance of trust and peace will develop.
Accusations of weakness miss the key point here; what this
reflects is a courageous attempt to try to bridge a gap of
communication that must be filled so that two key nations in the
world can improve their relations.
Communication is vital every single day in our business and for our
successful clients, and we appreciate that if something isn't
working, then only by changing the message or the means of delivery
can you hope to make a breakthrough - so good luck Barack.
