Doggone it! The truth will out

America's gripping presidential race has proven the old maxim that you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear, says Dougal Paver.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: who'd be a politician? And if Sarah Palin isn't contemplating that after three months of the most intense - and intrusive - scrutiny, then she ought.

At first glance her folksy, barn-storming, home-spun glamour held America in thrall. But as the saying goes, "charm will buy you ten minutes. After that, you better know something."

And it turns out that, when put to the test, Mrs Palin doesn't know an awful lot about the things that count when you're but a septuagenarian's heart-flutter away from the White House.

A shame, in a way: she'd brought some much-needed levity to the whole process. But then, so would I and no-one in their right mind would entrust world leadership in my hands.

Will McCain win? Nah, although it'll be a tad closer than the polls suggest. Cletus, Seth, Jethro and their like in the backwoods just won't be able to keep race out of the equation, come the day.

Still, would that British elections were quite so engaging and gripping. Hey ho.
