Divided loyalties

So the two oldest foes in international football are set to meet again in the last 16 of this year's World Cup on Sunday afternoon.

This fixture has always proved more of a headache than a sporting spectacle for a person who holds dual nationality for the two countries that have, historically speaking, not seen eye to eye over the past 50 or so years, whether that be on or off the pitch.

So as the Pfeiffer household prepares itself for the usual jingoistic jibes about Uncle Fritz bombing our chippy (don't worry I have heard them all), I look forward to how the red tops are going to treat this latest meeting between the two nations.

However, I am hoping that British attitudes towards the land of my birth having had a major facelift in the wake of the hugely successful 2006 World Cup will help to quell the usual hysteria that goes with any England vs Germany meeting.

So many people had their eyes opened to the country so much so that their previously misguided preconceptions had to change.

It was major PR success for the German tourist board and something that needs to be capitalised on in the future to make sure the blossoming relationship continues to prosper.

As for who I want to come out victorious on Sunday - may the best team win.
