With the party conference season in full swing, it is time for
speechwriters to get the pencil's sharpened and start
scribbling for all their worth. Rarely is the output of the
communications officers scrutinised as much as it is at conference
time.
With blanket media coverage guaranteed it is down to the craft of
the communications staff to make sure the assembled ranks of
journalists have something positive to report.
This is clearly an incredibly fine balancing act with different
journalists and different media all pursuing different agendas -
and many not being open about it.
Add to this the myriad of blogs, twitter feeds, commentators and
interviewees and you can see why the communications adviser has
become an indispensible part of the political process.
