I switched on BBC
Breakfast yesterday morning to be told by a concerned
looking
Sian Williamsthat it was snowing, and if I had to leave
the house "for whatever reason" that it would affect
driving conditions.
This epitomises a truly British
pastime - discussing the weather. Where else would it be headline
news that a) it's snowing and b) it will affect driving
conditions? This is information that anyone who cared to look out
of their window could gather, and knowledge that one hopes anyone
with a driving license would possess.
After cautiously navigating the icy
walk from the bus stop to the Plaza, the first
thing on everyone's lips when I got to the office was the
weather.
My colleague Jane Woodheadhad even taken a
photograph and was emailing it to her friends in the Maldives who
had never seen snow. Will they email her a photograph of a
wonderfully calm, hot and sunny day, I wonder? Something not seen
in this country since...well, I can't really remember.
Weather is something that unites and
divides us at the same time. Me? I can't stand snow unless it
falls between 24th-26th December, which it
never does, but other people can't seem to get enough.
Whatever the weather, and whatever
your opinion of it, one thing's for certain - we can all have a
nice chat about it once we get inside.
