In what has been described as 'difficult times' what is it that can be used to motivate and inspire, wonders Martyn Best.
I was fortunate to attend a very interesting presentation on behalf
of the Learning and Skills
Council recently at which
Steve Smith, the current British high jump record
holder, and only Briton to have won an Olympic medal in that
discipline, was highlighting the clear value of the benefit of
training.
It wasn't just nine steps and a quick jump that propelled him
to two metres 37 in 1996; just as it isn't a lucky idea and
good timing that makes your own business successful. It's the
sheer single-mindedness of doing the right things as often as
possible, and keeping a clear focus on the goal.
Steve recounted his need to keep a strict diet, and have his body
in the best possible shape, not only for completion, but for the
unseen training that went on every day, in every weather, in every
season. This approach to detail of ensuring the right nutritional
balance was present before every session entailed an extremely
early morning rise to have the right supplements digested, and be
ready for optimum performance.
Steve didn't make it sound easy to keep that focus, but it was
just that commitment and sacrifice that helped him achieve his goal
at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
And it's just that sort of approach that is vital now in all walks of life and business, and it made me reflect on a phrase that Steve used - "What's your own 5am start?"
