China gets the CSR bug

If you've not been here, then you might not associate the words corporate social responsibility with the People's Republic of China, says Martyn Best.

However, you'd be surprised.

Yesterday in Shanghai the global law practice DLA Piper, along with Standard Chartered Bank, hosted a highly discursive forum on this very issue.

Whilst we were unsurprised to hear DLA and Marks & Spencer extol the benefits of CSR, it was the Chinese speakers who grabbed the attention. Mr Chen of Tongya Group and Daniel Wang of the Charitarian Group advocated wisely why China needs not only to 'be seen to do good' but to actually embrace CSR as part of their corporate culture.

Despite being effectively number two in the world economic league, many areas of Chinese life are in a formative stage, but the acknowledgement by business that they can support the state in this responsibility is a cute twist on the Big Society issue that our own UK government is promoting.
