Carb cravings knock me off course

The Atkins diet is delivering the goods, says Dougal Paver, but his body clearly craves carbs.

A while ago I wrote about the start of my journey on the Atkins diet - a quest that will see me lose almost 3 stone in order to get up this, and three other Pyrennean mountains like it, in just four days.

Whilst any loss of focus isn't an option - there are children at Claire House depending on the money we raise - it's a hard slog.

Most difficult is avoiding alcohol - let's be honest, it runs like water in our game. And alcohol, as we know, is full of carbs. Too much of it and the genetic default condition known as 'naan suppression disorder' kicks in. You can knock Atkins off course in the blink of an Indian waiter's eye once alcohol enters the fray.

And so it was that last week I found myself with a group of clients and friends on an over-nighter at the magical Inn at Whitewell for our end of season shoot dinner, with predictable results.

Two days later - having gone straight back on to a strict no-carbs diet - and I still weighed nearly 3lbs more than before that dinner. Clearly, show an Atkins body a gram of carbs and it'll crave it, store it and multiply it for all its worth.

Still, I'm 21lbs lighter than I was on January 4th, which leaves just 19lbs to go. Key to knocking this lot off will, I think, be joining a gym, which I'm set to do on my return from holiday next week.

Meanwhile, it's a daily yomp up a Bowland fell for the next five days. That should sort it. I'll just have to avoid the Inn at Whitewell whilst I'm up there.
