Campaigning media help get hospital over the line

Liverpool's media has played a key part in the fight for a new city hospital, notes Michael Wood.

Finally, a ray of light has appeared for Liverpool's medical community.

A two year legal battle has been dropped by campaigners, clearing the way for the construction of a brand new £451m Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Healthcare in the city has been blighted in recent years by dated facilities. Despite Merseyside boasting some of the best medical centres in the country, our main hospital has not been allowed to develop as it should. The announcement of a new and state-of-the-art hospital has rightly been welcomed by a campaigning media, civic and business leaders across the city and here at Paver Smith LLP.

Since 2008, our capital of culture year, Liverpool has undergone a Cinderella-like transformation. Our city centre now sparkles, our economy has ridden out the recession remarkably unscathed. Now, surely, it is time for medical care in the city to undergo the same transformation.

Now that the last obstacle has been removed, perhaps our city will at last get the world class healthcare it deserves.
