"Go west, young man" has long been standard advice to those seeking their fortune, but today the words " Go east" have greater contemporary resonance. The lure of China and in particular Shanghai suggest a new land of opportunity is emerging.
I and my good colleague and wing man Chris Hulme are there this week visiting the Liverpool Pavilion at the world Expo 2010, and we can confirm the scale of the opportunity here. Occupying an area the size of Gibraltar, spanning the Huangpu River, the Expo site is host to around 140 countries and 40 cities who are using this as an exciting shop window to the world.
We are visiting the Liverpool and UK Pavilions today, and what has been described by broadcaster Edward Barton Jack as the "legendary" Saudi pavilion. Edward, who has a daily show on East Radio 89.9FM has lived in Shanghai since 2003 and has some fine insights into local life. These include the absolute practical necessity of having your destination available in Chinese characters to show your taxi driver, and the critical need of an umbrella - daily life here is fascinating but not simple for an Englishman abroad.
The work that Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Vision have done in getting Liverpool on the Expo map is really starting to pay dividend.
Tomorrow we shall see if I did find the Expo and a view of the
scale of activity here in Shanghai.
