Bart not singing just yet

Bart Simpson is not quite the fat lady, notes Martyn Best, but we all look forward to hearing his melodic voice.

Last week's blog echoing Bart's perennial plea of, "Are we there yet?" in questioning the end of the recession derived some curious answers this week.

A gloomy review of the UK's last quarter's performance indicating a 5.5% annual downturn, and the tragic rise in unemployment to 7.8% of our workforce, was followed shortly by our close European neighbours giving an affirmative response to Bart. France and Germany now seem to have followed Canada out of the mire of our economic decline.

The UK seems to be suffering rather more than our allies, and our only consolation can be that the storm is usually at its worst before it ends.

So, we're not beating our European neighbours just yet, but on the dawn of the new football season, we did salvage a draw with another ally, Holland

As an Evertonian, I know what hope is all about, so let's all at least hope that Bart will be yodeling loudly very soon.
