There's not a great deal about the American media that
I'd choose to transplant to the UK, but wouldn't it liven
things up a bit if our political broadcasts shared the same sense
of the ridiculous?
The republicans' latest attempt to discredit Barack Obama is
bizarre to say the least. The TV Ad juxtaposes images of the
democratic candidate with footage of Britney Spears and Paris
Hilton on the red carpet.(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7534662.stm)
The desired message of 'all fur coat and no knickers' is
pretty clear, but I'm not sure it hits the mark.
I don't see how broadcasting footage of your rival being
greeted by rapturous crowds could possibly strengthen your cause,
especially when - like John McCain - you've been accused of
lacking any charisma. And at a time when America is more
self-conscious than ever about its foreign policy, the fact that
these scenes were shot on Obama's world tour makes them even
more impactful.
Still, at least it's entertaining. I can't recall a UK
party political broadcast that's left such an impression. The
Tory's 'New Labour New Danger' poster campaign with
those demon eyes remains a lone high point for me.
As for suggesting Obama is the new Britney - couldn't the
republicans have looked a little closer to home for an example of a
Southern States-export who's gone from celebrated symbol of
good old 'merican values to international embarrassment?
