Ash cloud returns to cause more havoc

Just when we thought we could sit back, relax and look forward to our summer holidays, the ash cloud causes travellers yet more heartache.

Chatting with friends over the weekend, I was rather surprised that every member of the group had opted to take their holidays in Britain this year. I already have two holidays abroad booked - not until June and December - and I have been quietly confident that all would be resolved by then. Today, I am wishing I had taken the advice of friends and family and opted to stay in the UK instead.

Why do we always feel we have to escape Britain for our holidays when there are so many beautiful places to visit and stay in our own country? And by staying closer to home, we are more likely to have our holiday guaranteed.

Today, for those of us planning to venture abroad, it is a picture of total uncertainty. With flights cancelled and delayed, threats of strikes by BA staff adding to the mayhem, and the ash from Eyjafjallajökull continuing to drift south from Iceland, it is not a happy picture.

Meanwhile, the agony continues for the tens of thousands of holidaymakers who are now safely back on UK soil but are fighting for compensation after being forced to extend their holidays.

And there is no sign of the situation changing .... as the volcano continues to erupt, the level of disruption to air travel is changing minute by minute. So if you want to be sure of getting away this summer the safest option to take would be to remain on British soil - after all, we are being promised one of the hottest summers on record.
