Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are the words of Bart Simpson reflective of the frustrations and hopes of our country, wonders Martyn Best, during a week when there have been a number of signs that the dreaded recession may nearly be over?

What signs may these be?

1. A rising stock market and new found optimism amongst our City folk?

2. Are our banks making some profits nowadays, even without one being clobbered by write-downs of another?

3. Did I see house prices rise for the second month and hopes for more?

4. Do I recall one of our fine commonwealth members in Canada declaring the end of the recession?

5. Is it really two years since the near decline of a northeast institution, and I don't mean its football team

The last two years have not been representative of the ending of the 'boom or bust' cycle, and just as it has now been proven that evolution is inevitable, it is also clear that a downturn must one day end.

So, "are we there yet?" repeats Bart.

We are not quite in the historic realm of Mao Tse-Tungs's view of the effect of the French Revolution, and it being too soon to tell; and there will certainly be some further pain and anguish, but I would hope that we can start to tell Bart UK, that maybe, yes, we're nearly there.
