After the horse has bolted

The scandal surrounding MPs expenses has shown the public a side of their politicians that, despite maybe having their suspicions, they had never before seen.

Suddenly we are in a situation where the people who are paid to run the country are found to be taking advantage of their allowances, which were intended to help them do their job.

Instead they are using it to make profits on properties which they repeatedly "flip", buying televisions worth more than most people earn in a month and even sorting out their moats.

Some have lost their jobs as a result, the most recent being Michael Martin, and others have admitted defeat by repaying the money they had taken.

But the thing that grates with me is the fact that, were it not for the relentless stream of revelations in the Daily Telegraph (currently enjoying an increased circulation as a result), these supposedly honourable ladies and gentlemen would have been quite content to continue ripping us off.

The fact that this has all been unearthed during a recession only makes it more of a bitter pill to swallow.
