About to be humiliated? Then get your retaliation in first

Dougal Paver

Dougal Paver, Managing Director

If you're about to be humiliated then it's best to get your retaliation in first, says Dougal Paver. This is his attempt.

If you've ever wondered why people come out, via the media, and admit to some shameful conduct or other it's because they're attempting to stay on the front foot.

They'll have been rumbled by a red top and fessing up proactively - by negotiation with said tabloid or otherwise - is their wise effort at retaining some semblance of control over the situation.

I've advised people on this tactic myself and it has a lot of merit. And today it's my turn.

You see, at 1.30 today I shall be stepping out on to a golf course, bat in hand, certain of absolute humiliation. It will be excruciating. Don't ask how I got myself in to this mess nor why the office golf pro, one Martyn Best, isn't in my shoes instead.

The fact is, it's too late.

I've been running my own business for 15 years and managed to avoid ever stepping on the green all that time. Indeed, I've managed to make shooting, fly fishing and mountain walking 'the new networking' in my desperate attempt to avoid Tiger Woods on the fairway.

Now there's a bloke who could have done with fessing up before he got rumbled...
