Those of us who commute from south Liverpool
via Riverside Drive cannot help to have noticed the gaping hole
that has appeared in the road between Priory Woods and Jericho
Lane.
It has caused massive traffic
diversions and a 4 to 5 mile detour if you live adjacent to the
chasm, as I do.
Ok, so it's happened and
there's not a lot we can do about it apart from waiting for
around six to eight weeks for the repair.
However, there are one or two
observations that can be made regarding the (w)hole issue.
Why has it taken such a long time to
sort this out. Apparently the collapse actually started in the
woods adjacent to the hole in the road and therefore the collapsed
sewer problem is bigger than everyone thinks.
The road was never built to carry
heavy traffic as it is effectively built on the old tip and is a
sure fire candidate for subsidence.
It is not only traffic flow that has suffered as a result of the incident: pedestrians have been, too.
Most able bodied people can just about cope but I do wonder about disabled people and those with pushchairs.
It seems a shame that in a society which
strives for equality that a solution cannot be found to accommodate
all pedestrians. If the work is going to take an extraordinary
amount of time, then surely it would be worth constructing a more
semi-permanent arrangement and showing some consideration.
The biggest by-product for me is that the noise
levels from road traffic have reduced considerably, so maybe the
length of time to repair is not such a bad thing.
