Grand National. These two words seem to evoke such an enormous
amount of excitement, not only among the racing community, but also
among non-racegoers like myself. Why? Well
it is, after all, the world's greatest steeplechase, watched by
around 600 million people, but it is also a great excuse to spend a
small fortune on fancy attire and a day out with family and
friends.
Personally, I am not usually interested in horse racing, or with
the idea of wasting money on bets which I know will never
materialise into anything other than an empty wallet, but all
caution seems to be thrown into the wind on Grand National day, and
I am exhilarated by the very thought of spending hours on end
watching all the different races, be that in wind, rain or hail.
So what makes the Grand National more special than any other racing
occasion? Is it the result of a relentless media spin featuring
articles from top tips to top tops, or is it a genuine interest in
a day out at the races?
Well, for me, it is the latter. Although I am not claiming to be
unaffected by the sheer commercialism which surrounds the event,
it is simply a good day out, where I can
get dressed up to nines and have fun with my loved ones, which will
be extended by a trip to Alma de Cuba in the
evening for the official Grand National After Party! For this
reason, you will find me at Aintree on Saturday, in my new green
dress (I told you so), a money bag full of coppers and twenty pence
pieces and my wonderful family and friends. See you there.
