It's only a game

Football. I think life would be a lot less stressful without it. Especially if you are an Evertonian like myself.

I remember when my Dad took me to my first match at Goodison. I was eleven years old and overwhelmed with excitement at the thought of seeing the blue boys play.

Before kickoff he took me to one side and said: "Jess love, there is one thing you need to know about being a football supporter. There are always highs and lows for any team. Unfortunately, if you are an Evertonian, there can be a lot more lows than highs." Everton lost two nil to the Gunners that game. Lesson learnt.

Fourteen years later I am still a proud Blue, although after hearing about an incident at the recent Goodison Derby, I am quite concerned about the attitude of a "small" number of Everton fans.

I never went to the game myself, but my father who is a season ticket holder in the Gwladys Street, told me of a disturbing occurrence which happened towards the end of the match.

I understand that emotions run high during a Derby game, especially if you are trailing by two goals, but there is no excuse for chanting "murderers" at the Liverpool fans. It has been over 20 years since Heysel and this tragedy should not be reduced to mindless and moronic taunts.

Obviously, the majority of Evertonian's were appalled by this display of ignorance, but this language is sadly becoming much more commonplace in football - witness the recent examples of homophobic chanting directed at Sol Campbell in the Portsmouth v Spurs game, and the racist chanting of the Croatian fans towards Emile Heskey.

People who go to matches are entitled to vent their frustrations, but there are certain lines which they should not cross, if you pardon the pun. Rather than shout offensive abuse at rival fans and players, why not get behind the team to try and lift their performance? As a supporter of the "People's Club" I feel it is important to inform fans of these albeit, "rare" incidents, so that they know that such behaviour will not be tolerated by Everton football club and it's blue and white army.
