Don’t go, Superlambananas

Last Wednesday officially marked Capital of Culture Day for Liverpool, as it was 20.08.2008. However, my sprits were slightly dampened from the news the day before - that the highlight of Capital of Culture only has a week left to brighten our city.

I'm talking, of course, about the Superlambananas which we have come to love and which are coming down on the 26th August. All 126 of the adorable characters will disappear for good on Tuesday - unless of course you have a few thousand pounds to spend to plonk one in your living room.

Love them or loathe them, for the last ten weeks they have been a major part of the success story of this year's cultural festivities. They have caught the attention of tens of thousands of visitors across the country who have visited our lovely city to join in the lambanana frenzy.

Their presence even spread down to London's Euston Station, where Superlambanana 'Lovemedoodle' took up residence at the start of the festival. Luckily though, this little fella has been transported back up to Liverpool to stand in Liverpool Lime Street so he can see out the remainder of his time with the rest of his superlambanana pals.

The lambananas, which were commissioned by the Culture Company to bring together artists, businesses and community groups, have created a huge buzz across the city, and have certainly achieved their aim of reflecting the fun and diversity across Liverpool. I am sure I am not going to be the only one sad to see them go.

In fact, a digital campaign has already been launched on social networking site facebook, entitled 'We want lambananas to stay forever!' and with 4,343 members so far it seems thepublic is backing the fight to keep the lambananas where they are.

At the moment though all of them are still set to be sent to the Super Hospital to be prepared for auction to the highest bidder in September, and while we may miss them across the city it is good to hear they are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the Lord Mayor's charity.

If we have to lose our little friends it is good to see they will be going towards a good cause - saying that, I will still be logging on to Facebook to support the 'Save The Lambananas' campaign.
